When will LGA 775 be dead?

Intel is releasing Core i5 which uses LGA1156 which will replace it. Should be out by the end of the year, it will basically be for lower cost CPUs based on Nehalem.

LGA775 is pretty much already dead in terms of future compatibility, Intel isn't going to be releasing any new CPUs for it.

They may realese 45nm Celeron's based on Wolfidale core like they did with conroe and Celeron.

Personally i dont think that i7 is gonna reach mainstream, so i believe that 775 still be here for awhile, but i don't know what you guys were thinking

i7 was never to be mainstream as smithereen stated. i think the 775 on the mid to high end quads would still be a good purchase even if you go a couple years between upgrades.
i dont see the big deal about releasing the LGA1156. the 775 has been around for a while and i couldn't imagine being bent out of shape about having to buy a board engineered for your new CPU. there are 775 boards that Penryns will fit on and not run on. this eliminates that possibility so i see it as a plus.

cool thread and nobody has the answer!

i think your all right 2-4 years

if intel is smart they keep it around just to pester amd - then again with die shrinks?

478 last a long time -- i go with 4 years

Good lord, why does everybody keep complaining about socket 939. It was around for a good 2.5 years which was pretty much the same as Intel's socket 478 yet you never hear anyone complaining about that one.

Intel pulled two socket 939's ... get it right !!! (i7 and i5).

The difference is that AM2 (socket940) was a fizzer ... no appreciable performance gaine through the transition from 90nm to 65nm ... until AM2+.

Intel's shift to i7 gave an instant performance gain ... just at a stupid cost.

Anyone with a relatively new 775 should keep the system and upgrade it to the fastest 45nm quad they can get and hang in there till i7 stransitions to 32nm with a jump in cache.

An overclocled 45nm LGA775 quad system is not appreciably slower than an i7 ...

Just a lot cheaper at mobo / cpu level.

Well the sockets are similar to what AMD did with 754 and 939. Its about as a good idea as that was...
