Long-term effects of continued usb hard drive use

I was wondering if there are any negative effects to keeping a usb hard drive continuously connected to a computer that is on all the time?

Are usb hard drives generally meant to only be connected for short periods of time?

Any help would be appreciated, thanks!

I don't think it would be any different for a hard disk on a USB link compared to one connected up inside the computer.

There may be heat issues if the enclosure is small and unventilated.

Nope, shouldn't be any issues.

If the USB drive is properly designed, heat shouldn't be an issue. But that doesn't necessarily mean that they're all properly designed...
