Can I drop a Q9450 into this system, or will I need to upgrade the memory and motherboard too? Have a 6600, need faster encoding.

Memory is fine, but you will need a new motherboard. Also, you do realize that most (if not all) motherboard manufacturers provide a CPU Compatibility List on their websites, correct?

if you need to upgrade that much, why not get the new system

If you have the 3.3 revision of that board you can use a Q9450 if you upgrade the BIOS to the f13 version. The support is "non official", however.

DDR2 800 RAM isn't a problem on that board either.
