My friend has offered to sell me his unopened retail Phenom X4 9750 for $80. I thought it was a great deal when he first offered it to me a couple of weeks ago. But I keep reading about AMD coming out with cheaper Phenom II's and the AM3 processors coming soon. So, is this a good deal? Are they just about to drop in prices? I only have until tomorrow at 6:00pm before he sells it to someone else. It's the 125W version.

I was originally going to buy an Intel E5200, but I figured that this was the same price. I keep reading reviews that say that it's nearly as good as the $189 Q6600. Is that true? It's got to at least be better than an E5200 or E7300. And I will NOT be overclocking.

That sounds like a pretty good deal to me. The original Phenoms will probably just be phased out rather than priced lower and I doubt any of the new Phenom 2s will be that cheap.

Damn good deal, its the price range of a 2.4ish dual and even a fast single core.

Absolutley no reason not to buy this unless you specifically need fast clocks for something like FS X.

Well, the 9750 is about 5% slower than a Q6600 at stock speeds. The 9750 isn't the best overclocker though, as it has locked multipliers. You can pretty easily push the 9850 and 9950 BE's to 3.3/3.4 Ghz... but this would be difficult on the 9750, even if it is the same core.

It's still $149 retail so that's a really good deal. I doubt we'll see a Phenom II X4 under $150 any time soon. Also most of the Phenom I will be phased out shortly and they'll be entirely phased out by summer time, I doubt we'll see massive price drops on them. Personally I would go for that quad if given the chance.

I've decided that I'll get it. Is there any recommendations for mobo's or chipsets? What do I need in order to upgrade to the next generation(after PII's) of AMD processors?

A socket AM2+ board with the 790GX/790FX and make sure you get the SB750. They'll be compatible with the current wave of AM3 processors about to launch and hopefully all AM3 processors in the future.

Make sure they promise to support Am3 and make sure its from one of the big motherboard makers. SB750 is preferable except it will only effect the OC ability of your Phenom X4, so SB 700 is fine.

Newegg only has three motherboards that say they support AM3. Am I looking at this wrong or do I just really have only three choices?

Also, I'm getting the 125W, but I notice that there is also a 95W version. Is there any performance difference? Or is it just a matter of extra heat and little overclock headroom?

I think they stock more than 3 Am2+ motherboards.
I was talking about AM3 boards. Are AM2+ boards the same as AM3 boards?

You will second guess yourself to death. It sounds like a good deal and should do you good for a while. :)

Don't worry, I just got it and it looks great. I just can't wait to get it in a machine.

A AM3 cpu is supposed to work in a am2 board. But a AM2+ cpu does not work in a AM3 board. If they where the same then um, they wouldnt have two different names
