I brought a MSI HD4850 512MB card recently. And i don't feel it to be better than 8400M GT on my laptop......
I've tried Original driver provided by MSI and also latest Catalyst driver v8.11. Much difference felt while i played "ELDER SCROLLS 4: OBVILION". Nvidia 8400M GT showed much more good to see experience than HD4850. Also HD4850 showing poor Vista Rating than 9600GT.
Pls help me solve this problem...

Download fraps, check the fps on both cards. Also have you downloaded bannana splits better cities mod, or QTP3 Redimized? Both with put a load on your card and uses a lot of Vram.

What are the rest of the components in the computer that you put it into? If you have a really old CPU in comparison to what is in your laptop, it can slow games down.

So it sounds like you had the 9600GT in before the 4850? You need to uninstall every possible video card file and driver before installing a new driver. Even bumping up from catalyst 8.10 to 8.11, you need to uninstall the old drivers and delete the ATI folders before installing the new drivers. You can't install drivers over top of one another. It gets extra messy when you have nvidia drivers and ATI drivers floating around too.

Also what resolution is it at? At low enough resolution there's not much difference between an 8400 and a 280...

Is your system the one you have Validated in your signature? That should be a very nice system. I'd also suggest double cleaning the old NVidia drivers (if they were ever present).

Ya.. its the same system as shown in the cpuid validation.... Also no Nvidia driver leftovers in the system... coz... i re-installed O.S. ............

have you run 3dmark06 on it? might help pinpoint the problem, or something...
And what's your PSU? is the card getting enough power?

I downloaded FRAPS...... HD4850 and 8400M GT,both shows 60fps..
But difference seem to appear in clarity...... stones and water appear clearer/good in 8400M GT...

Ya...tried 3Dmark06... got 12111 points... It lagged/got stuck at some place... the CPU tests..

It's supposed to. My Core i7 @ 3.73 only pulls 2FPS on the first CPU test and 3fps on the second.

As for the performance, it sounds fine. 60FPS and 12k points is perfectly fine.

I compared my Vista rating with that of a friends desktop running:
Intel PentiumD 2.4GHz
2GB Dual channel 800MHz RAM
XFX 9600GT 1GB
Vista Rating for Graphics & Aero = 6.2

My desktop:
AMD Athlon64X2 6000+ @3.3GHz
2x2GB Dual 825MHz RAM
MSI HD4850 512
Vista Rating for Graphics & Aero = 5.9

But it seem to have level of details low in 4850... its confusing na..

lol I didn't know vista rating could go over 5.9... Are you sure that it really is 6.2 for your friends because your system is the better one

and 12K is fine, the system seems to be working just right. Don't know what's up with oblivion though, 4850 should outperform 8400M GT by a mile or so

Reply to Kari

I too think so.... 8400M GT is entry level and HD4850 mid-level...
About Vista rating, its true... rating could go over 7.

Crank up the res and details on the game.

Are you by chance using an old CRT? If so, can you run @1280x1024?

Your GPU is not doing much at your low res. I think I'd max out the settings and see how it runs.

they must have changed it then, earlier everything maxed out at 5.9

I've tried max. @ 1280x800. Thats the highest.

Something is fishy about your Vista performance rating. I thought 5.9 was the highest you could score.

My 3 3870s score 5.9, and nothing on my system scores over that.

Thats not my rating.... its from my friends desktop...
Me with HD4850 have 5.9.

After checking google, it appears that modifying your Vista performance rating is easy. Seems like he's done that.

wait, you get 60FPS on both your laptop and on your desktop in Oblivion? So you have the vsync enabled? That will cap your FPS to your monitor refresh rate (60) I am not familiar with Oblivion to know if it has a FPS cap when vsync is off....that could be happening as well which would make it look like both cards are performing the same.

For the detail, go into catalyst control settings and under 3D slide your mipmap settings to the highest quality. Set everything else to off or use application settings and see if that helps make things look better.

Also, what is your laptop's resolution set at? If your laptop has a higher resolution than what your desktop is running at then things will look better. 1280 is a pretty low resolution...is that as high as what your monitor will go? What size monitor do you have for your desktop?

I set the game at Ultra High. In that V-Sync is marked ON.

Turn it off. V-sync forces the maximum FPS to stay the same as the moniter refresh rate (60 by default). You'll see the diffrence between the two once V-sync is off.

after distinguishing the difference between the two cards with vsync-off,turn it on. if you're constantly getting 60fps why bother going higher? screen tearing is annoying and the game is more fluid if you're getting constant 60fps.

oh shoot, you're problem seems to be the image quality not the performance per se. turn anisotropic filteringb to 8x at least (via the catalyst control center). maybe thats why you're seeing console-like textures in there. and if you're still capping 60fps turn it up to 16x AF.

Reply to wh3resmycar

I tried turning OFF Vertical Sync....... Then game plays at 110fps with flickers on HD4850.......... AntiAliasing is set to 8x in Options of Oblivion. 8x is max. in it...... also tried HDR(when enabled, AA need to be tutned OFF)... but no use.....

Reply to meodowla

It showed different in "Collin McRae Dirt"........ HD4850 outperformed all others.... good graphics in "DiRT"..... but still sympathetic in "Oblivion"

Reply to meodowla

"anisotropic filtering" is different from antialiasing. like what ive said, try to force "ANISOTROPIC FILTERING" to 8x-16x that should show better image quality. to do that you need to tinker with your catalyst control center (assuming you're using the version that came with it).

Reply to wh3resmycar

Ya.. I tried Catalyst v8.11... Its of no good... coz.. when using it increases grains/noise... So got occupied with the one bundled with MSI pack..

Reply to meodowla

i dont get it. were you able to set your aniso to 8x/16x?

Reply to wh3resmycar

Ya...i could set it to 16x..

Reply to meodowla

But no difference in noise.......
