my mother board is not recognising anything more than 256Mb, even though it states it should handle 1Gb, I have updated the BIOS to no effect. can anyone advise what to do.

Yes, the specs say up to 1GB. What exact model number modules are you using? Do you know what the organization of the chips on the module are?
The chipset datasheet says it supports "Mixed 1M / 2M / 4M / 8M / 16M / 32MxN DRAMs
− 6 banks DRAMs supported up to 1.5GB (256Mb DRAM technology)"
