hi. i was wondering if somebody here could chip in with recommendations as to which external hdd i should go for. i intend to use it primarily for storing media and have no problems with the usb 2.0 interface since i'm not going to be buying a new pc anytime soon. so far, i've been attracted to the WD elements 2 tb desktop drive and the hitachi simpletech 2 tb. which of these would be better? any other recommendations?

Western Digitall is a great brand, they make awsome hard drives. Go for it. Samsung are good as well. Your choice.

Imo, get an external 3.5" SATA enclosure with eSATA + USB 2.0 and grab a Samsung F3 1TB.

USB 2.0 is a pretty big performance hit compared with USB 3.0. The latter is still new, but worth searching out if you're not planning to use eSATA and have a motherboard that supports it (or are willing to add a USB 3.0 adapter card to your system).
