ok, still only been here about 2 months, reading lots, hopefully learning something too, I have got my AMD X3 435 on a M3A 770-DE opened to a Phenom II x4 B35 quad, had a fiddle with amd overdrive got it to 3.2Ghz using 2gb of 1333 ocz gold then got 4gb 1600 ram, loaded the 'optimum' bios settings, processors now running at 3335Mhz which has changed the ram timings to 6-6-6-15-20 from 7-7-7-20-27 but the frequency is down to 460MHz, shouldn't the ram Mhz be higher to be faster?
it maybe a daft question but I'm hoping someones gonna be nice and point me in the right direction :)

1600MHz ram actually runs at 800Mhz (DDR = double data rate, 1 clock cycle = 2 data transfers) so you are running the ram underclocked. you would not be able to run at 1840MHz with 6-6-6 timing.

it sounds like the optimum settings has linked your ram speed to your cpu speed, you can unlink them and they set the ram to what ever you want. there was an article a while back that compared ddr3 ram speed and timing, IIRC the optimum performance was with the 1333 MHz ram at 7-7-7, although the difference was marginal.

ty for your help there scud, i did think i remembered it running at about 600 when i originally used amd overdrive, which is why in OP I said, thought higher numbers=better :) after reading your answer, had a look in bios, timing for ram clock was on auto, selections were: auto, 333Mhz 1066 Ram 533MHz 1333 Ram, 766MHz 1600 Ram and one more setting thats higher but cant remember the numbers lol, so ive set it to 766MHz for now and ill see how it fares, Thanks for your help tho man
