Crossover cable

I am trying to connect a desktop with win 2000 and a laptop with XP using a crossover cable. I can ping the other computer from either one but I can not see either computer under network places. I want to copy the files off the win 2000 computer before I update it. Any suggestions?

yes I have tried everything I can think of.
