Trying to upgrade ram in an older computer -
MoBo - MSI KT4AV (VIA)
XP 1800+ Chip
Currently running 512 RAM - (2x256 PC2700 RAM sticks)

I may have bought wrong type of ram - 1GB of PC2700 333 RAM
Board specs say it's compatible with this type of ram and seller of ram claims ram is compatible with MoBo

What bios settings do I need to change to make this new ram work?

Adding new ram to empty slot causes startup error not allowing windows to boot. Missing file errors, etc...removing new ram starting with old ram it works just fine.
So I think I'm just missing something here...
Thanks!

Sounds like a compatibility issue between the two types/brands of RAM. Have you tried booting into Windows just using the new 1GB module? Have you udated the BIOS to the latest version to possibly mitigate compability issues? Have you read the mobo manual to determine if you can mix and match RAM module sizes in different slots? Have you tried rearranging the RAM so the 1GB chip is in the 1st slot and the 2-512MB chips are in slots 2 and 3?

As far as the BIOS settings, I recommend putting all RAM options to the default or auto detect.

Thanks for the reply. I've tried booting using only the new ram alone in each of the slots; I've tried using the new ram in the 1st and 3 slots while the other two are in consecutive slots; will try defaulting the bios settings. I've tried downloading the MSI bios, but even when not using Live Update - even when manually tried to go after the bios update on that damn site, when I get to a certain point, my computer will restart..it's the strangest thing...
