How do I get a copy of <windows root>\\\\system32\\\\ntoskrnl exe

i have an acer travelmate 2480 with windows xp given as a gift used. it did not come with recovery disk & computer acts as if im not the admin. so it won't allow me to do anything
help

Use the recovery disk and install a fresh copy of XP. Then install SP3 and all security updates and you will be good to go.

I have just installed a fresh Windows XP Pro service pak 3, and at the end of installation, got the error message about the root>\system32\ntoskrnl.exe...and says I need to install it, but not sure where to find the download to get it..I don`t want to buy some recovery CD that seems to be for sale on these sites, and know there is a way to get it, just haven`t found it yet. Can anyone help...
