Sharing a printer

I am having nightmares trying to get Windows XP Pro to print to a shared printer.

The printer (HP Officejet 6500 E709a series) is attached via usb to a pc running Windows 7 . I can print great from that pc, but when I try to find the printer on the xp pro machine, it will not locate it.

What do I have to do to get it to print?

have you shared the printer on the win 7 machine?

I was actually configuring it wrong.

Before, I was using a USB cable to the printer.

I now have the ethernet cable running from my printer to the router.

So, I had to set it up using the printer IP address.

Then it found the printer, which is now showing online and I connected.

you can also do it with the usb cable to the win 7 machine, just share it (make sure you have the network set to private so win 7 will communicate with the network) on the xp machine, add printer > networked printer and browse for it
