I have an intel dq965gf motherboard. all of the sudden it stopped running. Now when it is plugged in, the cpu fan starts up for a second then shuts off. The green power light is on and the red light comes on with the fan then shuts of with it too. This keeps repeating until I unplug it. Also, if I remove the 2x2 12v connector, it will stay on but I get no post or anything, but the cpu stays on. When I remove the 2x2, it then goes back to on, off. Is it the motherboard? I've tried different power supplies and I get the same result. Can I fix the motherboard?
Yes, the computer was running for about a year then suddenly it stopped, an now this is happening. I've tested everything i can think of. Is it a lost cause at this point?
Have you tried disconnecting ALL the parts of the motherboard? By that I mean: disconnect all hard drives/optical drives and their power cables, remove floppy cable/power, remove all expansion cards (except video if you have one). Make sure all USB cables are removed.
Try removing the battery on the mobo for a bit. Make sure the power to the power supply is unplugged or it won't clear the CMOS. Maybe even get a new battery, they are cheap and found at grocery stores now. Also try removing all RAM, and then install a different stick of RAM in the first slot only.
Get some compressed air and blast the heatsink. If none of these tasks change up anything, it might be time for a new mobo. I would normally suspect PSU, but you said you tried with multiple.
I did all of that. i took the motherboard out and started up that way.
I did some research and found that the heat sink I have on there does not say Pentium 4 support. It looks pretty much like the right one but I ordered another one anyway. Can that make a difference?
Well, my original thought when I read the first post was "That sounds like an overheating/bad heatsink issue". But it has worked fine for a year. Have you ever checked the temps of the CPU while the computer is in use (not BIOS)? You might have slow cooked the chip by running high temps for a long time.
