The Zire 31 is my second. Have a Handspring visor which is
great (still works!) but memory limits have forced the change.
So far so good ...except.....

Working at an outdoor booth over the weekend and the color
display is absolutely worthless in bright sunlight. Not even
direct -- under a shade canopy and still couldn't see the
screen. Changed the display setting to highest, still no
help. No problem with the b&w Handspring display.

Is there common with the color displays?

I'm surprised to hear that about the Zire 31. All the recent color units I've
had (Zire71, Zire72, and TungE) are quite readable in direct sunlight, although
they are still not normally *as readable* as the old mono units were. However
when the mono screens start to heat up in direct sunlight, as when used in AZ
poolside ebook reading, the contrast starts changing as has to be readjusted.
Sometimes if the weather is too hot it can go out of range and become very
difficult to read. (It was 111F degrees poolside here today.) The color units
don't seem to suffer from this problem. My solution? Below about 90 degrees I
take the mono since it still is easier to read in sunlight, but above that color
is better...
