I'm about to do a new build. I recently had some spare cash to buy a new hard disk, I could afford a 500Gb or for about the same money 2 x 320Gb. So I obviously bought the 2 x 320Gb. I thought I know, my mobo supports RAID 0 so i'll put both disks into RAID 0 and have 1 lump of around 600Gb. (The HD's by the way are Seagate barracuda's with 16Mb each 7200rpm SATA) After extensively reading about the performance benefits of RAID 0 I couldn't really see what the fuss was about. I couldn't notice any performace difference at all. So the question i'm really asking is this:-
Is RAID 0 really worth it if running from the MOBO? I think if you bought a proper RAID card you might see an improvement but as far as i can see there is just more CPU overhead without any performance increase with standard Mobo RAID.
Raid0 doesnt require a high end cpu or give any notable overhead! Thats Raid5 (even then the overhead isnt much) - please dont post any BS remarks for advice especially if you know nothing about it ghislaing
Raid0 raises the minimum specs of your pc (HDD performance) almost doubling hdd read and write speeds at the cost of reliability (and sometimes seek times) - two hdd's = twice the failure rate (theory) - like any hdd, as long as you backup your data to your needs you will be fine! Its well worth it (and only Raid0 owners will agree here, others just dont understand )
I use Raid setup's in all my high spec machines!
Oh and the basic integrated RAID controllers/chipsets are fine for home use - RAID0 and RAID1 especially if its an Intel chipset etc.
apache_lives, have you tried running RAID0 on a P4 motherboard with a third party controller instead of an Intel ICHxR (which is what the OP has) or are you only using high-end motherboards with Intel Matrix RAID? If the CPU is busy, then disk transfers will suffer far more than they would if using a faster dual core, Core 2 or Quad.
