I know that the only differences between a Phenom II X4 920 and a 940 BE is the fact that the 940 .2Ghz (1.2Ghz effec.) higher than the 920, and that it has an unlocked multiplyer for immense overclocking. However it is £20 more expensive than the 920. I am not going to overclock, and I do want to keep to a budget. Is the extra .2Ghz enough for an extra £20?
Its really up to you if its worth the extra money. Look at some benchmarks if your unsure of the performance difference. I do know that the percentage of cost increase is greater than the percentage of performance increase.
Get a good fan and a 940 if there's only £20 diff.
but you it would probably be a good idea to think about a 720 x3 aswell because you'll save £50-60 and they are only slightly less powerful than the 940 when both are oc'd
Even if you think you won't overclock.....you probably will. I know I didn't really think I was going to so I bought the 920 and than my board, the biostar TA790GX had built in overclocking so i figured I'd try it......i'm running 3.36 stable, 27 degrees idle and 38 load. You could probably save the money and just buy the 920 and do what I did and get it over the 940 speeds with no problem, oh ya, forgot to mention, that is just the stock heatsink.
Edit: Stability testing with prime 95 and superpi running at the same time bumps it to 52 degrees but it is stable and doesnt crash.
