Hey guys,

Im currently using a GA-EP35-DS3L motherboard, and a Tagan 580W psu, with a pentium EE 840 processor, a couple of days ago, I noticed a very bad smell coming from my PC, so I shut it down and opened it to investigate, and saw that two of the 4 pins on the motherboard connector were melted black, the plastic part of one of the pins was completely gone. The worst part was the motherboard was only like 3 months old. Now I dont really know what to do. Is the fault from my PSU or motherboard? If the fault is from my PSU, is my motherboard damaged internally, and vice versa? When I switch it on, it gives off the smell, and restarts itself.

Thanks

Do your research. This is why you should buy a quality psu always. Your low quality psu is bad and if you are lucky only took your motherboard with it and nothing else. You need to replace both of those parts for starters. Get a Corsair, Antec or PC Power and Cooling psu in the 450 to 550 range.

I brought the most expensive PSU at the time, a tagan 580W, its been working faultlessly on different motherboards for some time.

Just because it is the most expensive or has the most watts doesn't mean it is the best quality. Sorry I don't mean to be so harsh, there are much worse out there.

How old is it? Is it full of dust?

Well I do have to admit, it is three years old, so it may not be as good now as it was then. But when I checked it out earlier it was mostly dust free.

I feel your pain.

I had a psu also that I paid about $100 for that I though was good too. It worked fine for two years and then decided to blow up and it took my MB and cpu with it. So I have learned this lesson the hard way also.

So it is definitely a fault from my PSU and my motherboard is pretty much damaged aswell? Im not too fussed if its the PSU or the CPU that are fryed since they are pretty much due for an upgrade anyway, but I just got this motherboard :( .

If there are melted caps on the MB then it is gone. But until you can get a new psu and try to run it you won't know.

well its mainly the male part of the connector (the part coming from the PSU) that is melted, some of the plastic melted and hardened inside the motherboards connector, I managed to scrape out all of the loose plastic with a toothpick tho.

Right now if I switch it on it works, but it just gives off a horrible smell...

Don't risk anything with that psu. If there are other parts that have not fried you probably will with that psu.

Are you just talking about turning the psu on or the whole computer?

The whole computer

Ok then you probably only have a psu problem. Get a new one.

So it is probably not something thats wrong with the Motherboard? Might I need to replace the motherboard anyway because of the damage done to it?

Whenever I switch it on it just runs for a few minutes then restarts, keeps on doing that.

Is the mobo doing that with a psu that you know is ok?
March 23, 2009 10:35:14 PM

No, its with the same PSU

You are going to need to test the system with a new psu.

Don't try to connect a new PSU to the fried MoBo. Probably the MoBo is the fault part. If the MoBo is damaged, it could burn your new PSU. I advice test the PSU first. To test PSU, unplug the PC power cable, then disconnect PSU from MoBo, then use a paper clip to short the green wire with the ground (black wire), connect the PC power cable and observe if the PSU is working normally. If PSU is working the problem is in the MoBo and must be replaced.
