Is there any data on vertical cpu cooling fan/heat sink verses horizontally orientated mounted fan set up configurations. Specifically; for fan start up power required, average power required for a constant rpm, bearing failure data per there mount orientation. Is ther anyone who believes that one or the other is advantageous for any specific reason. Heat conduction into copper/aluminum has a coefficient of thermal conduction per second ratio that has a delay for heat transfer to occur. So I would think that a vertically mounted unit would restrict vertical heat disapation and assist a conductive thermal load of heat to be carried away better through horizontal air movement, due to it being held back slightly over vertical heat path exit direction of a horizontal mounted fan unit.
