I am looking for an upgrade to my current card-an 8600 GT...looking to increase my system performance and ability to play games/multimedia files. I am torn between these two cards..I may want to play GTA IV..
What card is best overall? ANy other cards I should consider?

The 4870 actually cost close to 4850 after rebate on newegg.com
The 4850's are very good cards for the money. You can also look at toms Chats they help and it depends on your resolution you play at.

Here are some good cards

mmm... the HD 4850 by far the better card simply, the higher res and more AA used the HD 4850 will beat the cr@p out of the 8800GT, but picking one depends on the res you play and how much Eye candy and AA you planing on using, if you find A 8800GT under 95$ its a great deal anything over that its not worth it, the HD 4830 out performs it in a similar price point and the HD 4850 simply crushes it just a little above its price...

Have you looked at the THG video card charts to compare performance for different games? It may depend on the game(s) you play.
While the HD4850 is generally the faster card, for Crysis the 8800 GT performs significantly better - for instance on (1280x1024, 4xAA, 8xAF, Very High Quality) the 8800 GT is 21.8 FPS compared to only 16.6 for the HD4850.
Just check the charts.

haha funnily enough i was advising a teacher at school who had an 8600GT to get an 8800GT... then the 4850 came out and i was like ;) thats the one to get.

pros and cons for each, depends which titles and settings.
