What is better the Radeon HD 3870 512MB or GeForce 9600GT 512MB for casual gaming?

Casual gaming? Which is cheaper? The 3870 is faster overall, but if you enable AA, the scores are probably rather close. The 3870 with AA off compares to the 8800GT, the 9600GT isn't much slower. Again however, if this is casual gaming, just get whichever is cheaper.

the 3870 i sold was a lot slower then my 8800 gt if your playing crysis get an nvidia card other wise get ati better bang for buck right now

Crysis sucks, dont base your decisions on one crappy poorly written game.

Reply to zipzoomflyhigh

I agree don't use Crysis as the standard measure. However if that is the game you are wanting to play the HD3870 does a bit better. Consider the HD 4850 1gb over either the 3870 over the 9600.

Couple of benchies...

Quick edit- To megamax the 9600 is NOT generally faster than the 3870 it is in fact generally slower. See benchmarks above.

9600GT is generally faster depending on the game, the settings, and the drivers used to compare them, but you have to keep in mind they are comparing the reference speed models. I'd say spend a few more bucks for a 4830 or 9800GT since the 3870s with full speed GDDR4 cost almost that much anyway.

very true about crysis looks great plays like pooo warhead was much better

Why not a 4670? That fixes the AA and should be faster than them both. Additionaly, it should be cheaper and less power hungry.

Reply to Ares_

Buy whichever is cheaper and/or which one has the best warranty and support. There's not a spits worth of real life difference between the 2.

crysis is optimized for nvidia

Reply to alvine

Not quite Ares. The 4670 compares very well against the 3850, but it should still be slower then the 3870. The 4670 is a good card for casual gaming, as is the 9600GT/GSO. (the 192bit card, not the 128/256bit cards.)

what is wrong with crysis? what was wrong with the gameplay? i thought it was pretty revolutionary. now in shooters i automatically hold in the middle mouse button and drag it to the bottom right . crysis revolutionised PC FPS gaming, and people didn't like it.

i liked the storyline, i liked the graphics, i liked the gameplay... what's not to like? so what if your rig doesnt play it at max... big deal. i don't think thats poorly written. i think thats beautifully written. They programmed for the future. they programmed AHEAD OF THEIR TIME.

btw, a 4670 doesnt even come close to touching either of those cards ares_.

ya you are right. It does not.

until you throw AA on and the 3870 and 4670 are about the same, but at that they point they are both at their knees in modern games.

sorry

i do beleive he said 9600gt not 8800gt

i have 2 3870s in crossfire and the performance has been outstanding. go for the 3870 ICEQ3 design, works like a charm and overclocks very well.

^yeah, but that's two of em... two 8800GT's are untouched by every single single gpu configuration (), so of course 3870's would be outstanding... pretty much any multi gpu configuration is completely unnecessary except at high res's.

well, when i game with crysis at high settings on my 42in HDTV, frames drop in the 14's and lower sometimes. but average is around 20-25:P
impressive huh? (sarcasm)

totally with you m8. crysis was amazzing. it was truely the halo of vista(except i have XP but besides the point!) the suit options, weapon addons, enemys, ect. all of it was just phenominal. cant wait for crysis 2!!!

the game leaves you wanting MORE

You didn't hear? Crysis is the cool thing to hate and to slam for poor optimization. Nevermind the fact most people who say that haven't played the game nor have any working knowledge of programming.

On a more serious note, Crysis performance is definitely slanted toward Nvidia cards, so don't use it as a benchmark between nvidia and ati, but you can use it to compare 2 ati or 2 nvidia cards.

Also, I have both Crysis and Crysis Warhead. I don't see a single difference in quality/performance.

Edit: I speel guud.

I totally agree 100%. at the end of crysis, i was like "woah. that was one helluvan epic game." but it just seemed too short! it was over before it began! :(

Crysis was not poorly programed; however, it did turn on things that added only a little bit but took away a lot of FPS. For example, long vegetation view distances and motion blur.

ohh and i am a hobby programmer.

Reply to Ares_

Crysis makes the stongest of systems ccccccrrrrrrryyyyy-sis.
this game was ment for the multicard systems

Reply to rambo117

OK. Im going to say this once.

Crysis is a game designed SOLELY for FPS fans. If you like RPGs more, you will dislike Crysis. If you like RTS, then you will dislike Crysis.

The game is Brilliantly written. If it wasn't, the opening day would have been like the opening day for GTA4 on PC. Im still pissed off about that...

Anyway, the Game plays excellent on lower level and midrange cards. The high settings are way more detailed than any other game with settings maxed. Thats the truth and people are turned off by the fact the CoD4 all high doesn't have the same fps and Crysis high. NO!!!! Totally different levels of detail that the cards (and CPU) have to process and store (Crysis eats memory for breakfast, lunch, and dinner). To back up the first statement of this paragraph, i have played Crysis and Warhead on my laptop (equilvilent to a Athlon x2 4000 and HD2600 pro) and my crummy 8800Gs rig and my new 4870 rig. The graphics scale with the power of the system, not the generic "medium, high, very high" settings. Each setting has a profound effect depending on your hardware and the game settings must be individually tweaked for best performance. Lots of people don't take this fact into effect.

And yes, i hit "v" and twitch my mouse whenever i try to jump over anything in any other game. lol.
========================

TO TS!!!!

The 3870 is a stronger card than the 9600GT. The 3870 has gotten better with driver updates over the time and will usually best the 9600GT. An exception however is brand biased games like Crysis. Unfortunately, this game heavily favors Nvidia's architecture and thus lends the green team 10%-15% higher frames than the equivalent ATI card. Check benchmarks of the games you prefer and then make your decision.

Good Luck!

haha i dont press V i use the middle mouse button =]

i kinda disagree with that though... i mean my 9600GT is playing crysis on VERY HIGH with AA dependant on the level on 1440x900. i think it all depends on your res tbh.. if i was playing on 1680x1050 i would probably need TWO 9600GT's to max it out...

btw thats very high on XP (hack) so of course it has better fps than vista. thats just my crysis experience though :D

Reply to V3NOM

^using the Natural mod, my 4870 can hardly max the beginning of the game. 1280x1024 btw. Thats with 0 AA. How in the world can your 9600GT even play at all with AA?
Don't make me run a damn benchmark.

XP 64 btw.

yeah forgot to mention (although i have countless times in other threads ) i also use the natural mod...

Very High HACK in XP. if you use vista, you probably have like 10fps less than me  which kinda makes all the difference from 25-30fps to 15-20fps...

LOL! havent uploaded pics yet but i got like 25fps... im very disappointed in this benchmarking tool :P

as a note... it was 23-25fps in both the GPU and the CPU benches... is this telling me something

btw, test the GPU bench lol not the other two...

edit: that is actually very high though cos of the hack..

edit later with pics.

did you run the GPU test more than once? the second time usually runs alot smoother than the first.

and btw, stupid question but how do you upload screenshots on Tom's??
ive been using the forums forever but never uploaded any screenies before..

Reply to rambo117

yeah, i thought that too when i first started :P just get a photobucket or any of those big time photo-website thingies... i have a photobucket account. then all you have to do is copy paste a line of text into the forums and voila!

yeah, i will make another go with 3 loops... i think it takes time to like buffer up all the RAM? cos if you watch the top right corner, the RAM slowly increases...

has anyone else noticed dark sand in the bench? like if i turn umm particles to medium, it goes back to in game colour... but my in game settings are "custom" because of the natural mod and very high hack.. but if i set the bench to "Reset to currect game settings", they don't change, and neither does the colour of the sand... weird ramble anyway here's my screenie (might be blurry im not sure... photobucket reduced it to 1024x768 from the 1440x900 screenshot so..)

yeah it is a bit blurry but you can make out "avg 24.xx fps" :( still playable! not jerky or anything so.. try with 3 loops, then again with AA.

Silly children. The 9600GT is incredible card if your running 1333 mhz bus. If your pimping DDR then get your ATI and yes it will be a tad faster. If you have DDR3 ram in your system you can do AMAZING things with a 9600GT. I have seen 790I systems with 3 9600GTs blow the doors off any two cards on the market. It just depends on if you take advantage of the super high clocks this card can do.
