He meant what kind of RAM do you have already. Mobo brand at least, so that he can pick compatible parts.

Download CPUz ID and run it, then check the motherboard tab. Also, look at the RAM tab, it will say the brand and speed of what you are running.

Depending on you current RAM modules you may have to buy 2gb sticks to upgrade to six. If you have 2 1gb sticks and 2 512mb sticks you'll have to get 2 2gb sticks and keep the 1gb sticks. But if you have all 1gb sticks you could only buy 1 2gb stick and be okay with 5gb instead of six. But also make sure your motherboard will support more than 4gb of RAM. And you also have to make sure to get the same RAM frequency and timings or else some will scale up or down depending on the situation. Also make sure you know your RAM type, (Dual or single channel) and buy accordingly.

Mobo: ASUS M2N-SLI
Memory: 3x 1GB DDR2 RAM
OS: Wind0ze Vista Home Premium (32-bit)

It can only accommodate 4 DDR2 RAM sticks...So to upgrade to 6 GB, you would have to remove 1 1GB stick and add 2X2 GB sticks...

No use going with 6GB because a 32-BIT OS will recognize only a maximum 3.5GB of RAM
