How can I update my P3 from the present 648 Hhz with 256 ram to higher speeds? Mother board or new processor?

Not worth upgrading. You'll need at least, motherboard, cpu, memory. Your PSU won't be enough for the new system, drives maybe inadequate size to host OS and apps. Case may not have enough cooling.

Best to just get new system.

Just go to a computer store that deals in antiquated parts.Perhaps you might find a 1 Ghz P3 CPU if your motherboard supports it.2 years ago I picked up 2 P3 antique systems like you described for $50.
Right now you could probably get a Pentium 4 system for somewhere around $50 to $100 in used condition.

Well you don't have to get a new system. As JJ said, a P4 might work. What are your needs? Gaming, Office products, web surfing?
