Installed used hardrive hp5000 boots up to cd but bar just blinks

How do I get a used hardrive to work,

If you are betting a blinking cursor in the top left, chances are the drive is bad. Make an Ultimate Boot CD http://www.ultimatebootcd.com/download.html, it has several drive checker tools, run a check on the hard drive.

If it's bad, get a new drive, there is no practical way to fix a bad one.
