Hi there, was just wondering if the Corsair HX620w is capable of powering the HD4870X2's (i'm looking specifically at the Powercolor HD4870X2 750Mhz 2Gb DDR5 PCI-E)

Also wondering if the 6+2 PCI-E cable supplied with the PSU is capable of handling the 6 + 8 pin PCI-E power requirements for the card or would I have to rely on the convertor provided by the manufacturer?

Thanks in advance for any help :D

Should be OK unless you have a bunch of drives or a very overclocked CPU. And the 6+2 cable will work as well.

I don't think a 620W can handle a HD4870, even if it's Corsair. That PSU is a very good one by the way.

I would go for a 700W or higher. Corsair recommended.

Hey, how about we find a ... source?

This clearly shows a single 4870x2 under load drawing ~450W from the wall. Now, I don't remember what reference system they are using, but it's probably not a light-weight in terms of power draw.

Thus, unless you're running a monster system, I expect a HX620 to be plenty of power.

be my guest

amps and rails says a 520hx can do a 4870.

The HX620 has PLENTY of power.
In addition, the HX620 is rated at "MAX SUSTAINED LOAD", not "PEAK LOAD".

Based on the review above, and many more the 620W Corsair has LOTS of power to spare..........

its not good theory.

as kaldor said you will be ok for sure but if your going to overclock then you might want to get a bigger psu. the 4870 X2 only really needs the 8 pin if you overclock the gpu, otherwise 2 6 pins will work just as good.

Hi,

you can order new 6+8 cables at corsair website for free.

They sent me 2x 6+8 this year for nothing. Took 2 weeks to receive them.

no way that would be nice do you have a link were i can go to to get an 8 pin cable from corsair?

I'm sorry, my bad, I meant the HD4870x2. Yes, a 620hx can run a 4870.

But hey, do you even believe those calculators? Get your mind straight mate, those calculators are telling me that a 520hx can run a HD4870x2.

Why wouldn't you believe the calculator? Why would they tell you one of their cheaper psu's can handle something that it can't? Wouldn't it be in their best interest to tell you that you need one of their more expensive ones?

My advise is: Go for a 700W or higher. Just to have space left to let it make peaks.
Remember that a PSU shouldn't be used for more than 80% of it's capabilities.

(Argh, why can't we edit posts?)

I was too late, again.

@ MooseMuffin: Have you ever had experiences with a HD4870x2 on a 520W? Apparently not.

I like this calculator:

It's unbiased. I haven't actually tested it's validity though.

Wow. I actually tested it, and it comes up with reasonable numbers!!!

It's pretty close to my system draw (150W gaming, it claims 175), though I had to make some approximations regarding components.

Thanks for the help guys. I'll probably go with getting a 700w then :D

Thanks again. All your help and suggestions have been very helpful :D

Merry Christmas!

i hope you're not just getting a 700w psu because its says 700w. please be sure with the amps on the 12v rails.

good luck.

The wattage listed is the sustained wattage, not the peak, so it's cool :D

It's a Coolermaster RP 700w Modular.
