Okay so I recently bought a BFG Nvidia 8800gt oc for $199.99. I also had to upgrade my PSU from a 450WATT to a 650WATT PSU. I installed everything correctly and the drivers/devices, but i got this message saying your Nvidia card has to decrease performance because of insufficent power.

My PSU - http://www.canadacomputers.com/index.php?do=ShowProduct...

SPECS on the PSU

DC OUTPUT: +5V +3.3V +12V1 +12V2 +12V3 -12V +5VSB
MAX: 25.0A 25.0A 22.0A 22.0A 25.0A 0.5A 2.5A
MIN: 0.2A 0.1A 0.5A 0.5A 0.5A 0A 0A

My videocard is the BFG Nvidia 8800GT OC (link:http://www.bfgtech.com/bfgr88512gtoce.aspx).

Just wondering what is the problem. Because I'm stumped.. thanks

basically the +12v1 and +12v2 rails both have 22A and the 12V3 has 25A

also here are my comps other specs if i need them

OS: Windows Vista Home 64-bit.
BIOS: Phoenix v6.00PG
Processor: AMD Athlon 64x2 Dual Core 4400+ 2.3GHz (external clock 199mhz)
Memory: 2046MB RAM
Pagefile: 1078Used 3267Available.

Graphics Card: Geforce 8800gt bfg
1269mb aprox total mem.

that's basically what i got from going to Start>Run>Dxdiag

Also I dont no if this has to do with anything but I have two HD's ACER (D:)  and DATA (D:)  now the Acer one is 24.9GB free out of 144gb and the DATA has 138gb free out of 144. I think i read somewhere that harddrives affect ur GPU but im not totally sure.

ALSO! I ran benchmark3d program thing and i was watching my FPS and i was getting like between 100-500 FPS on everything. I think i got like 80fps lowest on like high graphics parts. but when i play a game such as cod4 even on low settings i get like 20-50 fps..

pic of results for 3dmark - not sure why my CPU test 2 is very low FPS

I don't know if it's a bad card or power supply.

I currently have a
BFG OC 8800 GT
Q6700 oc to 3.3 ghz
Antec 650W Trio (just like you)

Never had that problem, so something is wrong with one or the other.

hmm could it be my CPU is crappy cuz on the benchmark test thing my FPS for CPU test 2 is like crappy 24fps ...why but when it runs teh first tests its like 100-200fps in game test

Stupid question: have you checked the cable inside?

Take whatever you can back to the shop and tell em its not working, either way you will eventually figure it out.

wats teh cable inside got to do with anything? its plugged in correctly

8800GT should have 24-26amps
Your psu:
Earthwatts EA650 ~45A
Either the 6 pin pcie cable is not connected correctly or your psu or card is defective.
You have enough power to run 2 8800GT's.

Everything. The 8800GT needs the 6-pin PCIE power cable plug into the graphic card itself.

That message only comes up when the cable is not plug into the card properly

If you've done so and still get that error message, that means the card is defective

Maybe the PSU 6pin PCIE cable is defective too and is not supplying power, though thats unlikely

Either way, your card is not getting any power from the 6pin PCIE power cable

$200 8800GT? ouchies. Anyhow, I have an 8800GT with a Thermaltake PurePower 500W. It has two rails 12V1 has 14A and 12V2 has 15A and everything runs peachy. Again, I would double check the PCI-E power cable (usually though mine, the video card, squeals very loudly if this isn't plugged into the card) or possibly a defective card, maybe even a defective PSU.

I tried using the splitter adapter the 8800gt came with and it seems to be a bit louder like working at full power possibly? I still ran the 3dmark test and came out as basically same results. my CPU performance was low and the game performance was like 100-300FPS.

now one thing i noticed when looking at that adapter. The part that plugs into the actually videocard is a 6pin tho only 5 of those pins have little metal prongs inside of them, the bottom middle one doesnt? i dont no if that is a grounding for it or what? is there any other programs that can help me with seeing my Frames Per Second?

Ok Timmy keep you hair on! Just that last time i saw a message like that a molex/ (as some of you know) floppy disk power cable wasn't connected/ properly connected.

Now either you have a crap/ faulty psu.

your cpu eats a lot of power along with the other parts

or

the card is faulty.

Tell us all the components you have, as well as the devices you connect, and what type

well i just re-applied the adapter and voila..it works great now..i still get same results on benchmark3d test(actually 2000marks higher) but i can run COD4 highest settings with about 60-70FPS :D

one thing tho? what does it mean on the test CPU performance cuz it only gts me 22FPS..which is crap in my eyes. How do i upgrade this or what would be a good upgrade to make the CPU performance at like 100fps?

any1 link me to what i need to get that up to 100fps or so

Great!

What test are you running Tim?

22fps in a game to me is basically an average of what my ASUS VX2S 2.2 Core 2 (8600GTS [moble]) notebook can perform with Gears of War running on Dirext X 9 on a medium rez.

Im real old school "not old" Basically if your games running at 60fps thats perfect. Cant do better.

100fps? do you have a refresh rate of 100hz on your monitor? i doubt it.

Still glad you solved the issue.

That CPU test is not a problem. Trust me. If you really want to see low framerates, try 3dmark06.

My Core i7 @3.73GHz only gets 60fps in that test in 3dmark03, and <4fps in both tests in 3dmark06. It's not that the computer sucks, it's that the test is demanding.

There ya go, congratz :D

You meant 3D Mark?

In normal games, the 3D graphic you see on screen is rendered by the graphic card processor, GPU.

In this silly CPU test, they use the CPU to render the graphic instead. Obviously CPU will suffer performance drop because CPU is not a massive parallel processor, it is not design for graphic rendering

22fps with CPU rendering is amazing.

This test is the stupidest test on Earth, just ignore it. I dont know why they feel the need to render graphic on CPU when video games don't do that.

wats the bet he didnt plug the molex's in properly... stuff the adapter though use the proper 6 pin! more stable power..

lol yeah cjl i get between 0 and 2 fps for the 3dmark06 CPU tests :(

and whoever said molex/floppy disk cable, they are two completely different cables. not that it matters in this day and age

He said the POWER cable for the floppy drive and that is a molex. I think you're thinking of the data cable.
