Well, the two big questions are what do you want to do with the CPU (OC, etc.) and what is your budget? A good (in my opinion, it is what I use) low cost medium OC cooler is the AC Freezer 64. If you want one of the top OCs (3.8+) however, you will probably need more, but it will cost a lot more as well.

haha i have the phenom 2 940, im using the Thermalright ultima 90 with the antec 900 case - the side fan is attached. thats why i chose a smaller Heatsink. im getting 30 - 33 C doing normal stuff on my desktop ( music, web, msn, and whatnot. ) i did overclock, 3.5ghz 1.4v so.. i would recommend the thermalright ultima 90 if you have a fairly small case

As EXT64 has mentioned... what do you want to do with the CPU. If only mild o/c, I run my PII 940@3.5ghz with stock cooler, everthing on default, except the multi. It is running fine, the chipset's heatsink is much hotter than my cpu cooler. (gigabyte GA-MA790GP-DS4H)

If you don't mind a little noise the ultra chilltec thermo electric cooler runs my q9650 around 38c to 75c (75c running prime95) overclocked to 4.125ghz.

I to am wondering what the best cooler for the phenom II 940 is. I overclocked my phenom II to 4.6 but it got very, very hot so i had to drop it back. I also do alot of gaming plus general stuff(cranking some tunes, work, web surfing etc) So whats the best cooler for me? Please don't tell me to get liquid cooling, i did that once. All i'll say about it is that the hose cracked and leaked...you figure out what happened next

Thermalright Ultra-120 Extreme (TRUE)
http://www.petrastechshop.com/thulhecpucos.html

You also need to purchase the conversion kit from LGA775 to AM2+ socket.

XIGMATEK HDT-S1283 with 120mm fan is a great cooler for the price.
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Prod [...] 6835233003

It says it compatible with AM2, LGA775, 939, 754 sockets.

Essentially, no. You can get Coolermaster V10 if you have that money, but Thermalright Ultra 120 is the most recommended cooler in the enthusiast community.

I take it that you have some issues with the Ultra-120 :sarcastic: :sarcastic:

XIGMATEK HDT-S1283 great price and you get a free USB cable if you get it on Newegg. I just ordered two of them last week. One went on my Phenom 2 940, the other on my old Athlon X2 6000+. Both processors dropped from idling in the 40's to 50's to idling in the low 30's and maxing in the mid 40's. I've been thru several other after market coolers and by far the xigmateks have been the best for the price.

Yeah Xigmateks make good coolers for CPU's. There might also be a Scythe cooler for the Phenom II 940.

so if anyone who already try using cooler master GeminII. please let me know the performances. I like the design and the price is reasonable too. but i dont know about the performance. :pfff:

Many sites still say the Thermalright ultra 120 extreme is the best for amd. The xigmatek is nice at that price range. The 64 Freezer is barely a step above the retail heatsink.

I run my X4 940 @ 3.7 Ghz and idle at 36C and may go to 50C loaded with an ALC Domino cooler, about 70-80 bucks street. I run it on medium speed, which is quite a bit louder than silent.

how about Zalman 9700NT Cpu Cooler ? I already made an order for this item. based on my friends opinion an experience. this type of cooler will give a superb service. lol..but this thing is huge... :kaola:

Yes the Zalmans are quality air coolers. Typoically I see them recommended for intel proc, but they will provide good cooling.

Im runing the 940, stock fan, and my computer is in my closet with the door closed (not the best place)

With the closet being sealed, it runs at about 42c when i play my games (4x eve-online clients, surfing the web, and teamspeak/vent)(35c idle) when i have my closet open, it runs at about 37c. (30c idle)

this is with the STOCK heatsink/fan

Get a corsair h50, it cools as good as the TRUE but is alot smaller, and doesnt block ram slots.
