1GB is typically for screens 24" and larger, although there has been charts to prove it only boost up to around 10 fps with more ram.

Just make sure the RAM is not clocked slower?

While the extra ram helps for high resolution and filtering, its hard to say really if the 9800GT can actually cope under such situation. If it cannot, then you will still end up lowering your setting to a playable one, in which the VRAM usage will drop too, fitting nicely into 512MB

But if the RAM speed remains the same, then I guess its ok then.

Though I personally will not advise you to go all out and get the 1GB for a 9800GT, which isn't exactly capable of high res quality gaming anyway.
