Turn on your signature :D

I have managed to break 4.2ghz a few times, but only with a very cold breeze (-20c) from my nearby window in the last few weeks of winter. I am hoping to get better results from a planned 890x upgrade in a few months. I can run 200x21 all day long, but at room temp ambient, 201x21 crashes on windows load up.

Getting to 4.0+ is a real challenge. The system might not even be stable at those speeds. I tried with my X2 555 BE an i only managed to get as high as 3.85 (with a crapy cooler). I did't want to mess with the cpu voltages, so i did't really get as high as i would have.

k not knowing what u have your cpu voltage set on so dont know if this well help but i am running at 4.2 using the same motherboard and cpu first set your cpu freg to 2600 some say more but runs stable on mine at that setting to up your cpu voltage to 1.5 to 1.525 also set your cpu northbridge to 1.2 to 1.3 runs stable on my at 1.2 but not all cpus r the same to set your northbridge voltage the same as your cpu northbridge and setting your dram voltage to 1.8 to 1.9 helps stable the ram if u r running tight settings on your ram give that a try and let me know if it helps u out and good luck o forgot to say i am stable at 4.2 useing a zelman 9900 cpu cooler so u should have no trouble sense u r watter cooling the cpu

I wish I could! For some reason my prolimatech megahalems very very badly. Even at stock clocks the CPU (965 125w) is hitting 53C! That's even with dual 90cfm fans plus an additional 2 fans at the front and back of the case. So best case air cooling scenario and i'm getting seriously bad temps.

How did you go about OCing to 4.2? I see you using a 250fsb with stock multiplier values on the NB and HT for your 4ghz settup.

Those are load temps.

well I gotten it down to 47°C with lapping and reapplying the thermal paste. They still seem like high numbers...Using the Megahalems too!

I must have really lucked out with my processor, My Phonem II 965 BE was able to hit 4.0GHz at stock voltage, and with only 1.46 volts can hit 4.2GHz, but not as stable...

I'm still experimenting though, should be able to do additional with FSB and HT overclocking also, but haven't gotten to it yet...

Those are not high numbers, not for load temps. Generally speaking, 70c is a break point for the CPU, and anything above 62c is entering a danger zone. 47c on load is very healthy, and would never be of concern for myself, personally, but considering the capabilities of your cooler, I can see why you are concerned.

I know that the numbers themselves aren't that high but the fact that I have a megahalems outfitted with 2 90CFM fans and those numbers are that high...it just doesn't make sense.

Cable management is great, the case gets great airflow. Mostly from being a HAF 932 but still. Both my old TRUE 120 and watercooling setup worked very well when they were in this case.

Those number were from around 78°F room temp.

Yea well 78F and up is considered hot, well at least for me it does because this normally means that the case is exhausting hot air into the room and in-turn making it warmer as the time goes by.

Is 78F the normal ambient or are you using AC to keep the room at that temp?

ok so some interesting (yet not too surprising) information in.

Always update your BIOS before overclocking! It can do wonders!

Before I couldn't even get 3.9GHz @ 1.42V stable and 4GHz @ 1.43V ran for an hour using the AMD Overdrive stress tester.

I successfully OC'd mine to 4.30G stable on air cooling, I backed it down because of the Vcore it required to get there I had no intentions of running it 24/7/365 on that high a voltage, but as a commendation of the 965 it took it no problems.

According to what you've posted in this thread and the Title being "Amd 965 Who can overclock past 4.2ghz" I don't see that you've gotten to 4.2ghz stable, so what is your actual intention here to try for a max OC for bragging rights so you can post a dream CPU-Z validation that is not even stable, or are you after the highest stable OC you can get from your setup?

I think the biggest negative of a user possessing a Black Edition CPU is they don't have a clue as to what they have in their possession and they want to make a CPU so simple to OC, into a nightmare of trouble.

Check out this link and see if it helps you reach your goals, if it doesn't you're in no worse shape than your are now, if it does, well congratulations.

http://www.tomshardware.com/forum/258573-29-overclocking-black-edition

By the way, my CPU-Z validation is 24/7/365 rock solid, but if you see where my Vcore is set to run 4.0G, you should be able to understand why I'm personally satisfied running it at 4.0G, on air cooling. Ryan

hey this is my first post on here so here it goes...

I know this thread is a bit outdated but i feel i can contribute

I have an amd 965 but seem to have an unusually good one!

I have an Asus m4a785td-v mobo- kinda on the lower end but still a solid board. I didn't buy this on for the intend on over clocking.

I also have the Kingwin xt-1264 cooler- again I bought this not so much for overclocking but so I wouldn't have to listen to the stock cooler one whine at 5000 rpms- this is basically the bottleneck for my overclock

I also have a HAF 932.
My original intent was to not overclock but after getting a nicer cooler I found myself in bios minutes later with a rig at stock voltages at 3.8ghz (which is my 24/7/356 setting)

there it is at 4 ghz. Cpu-z -my only explanation is that cpu-z is displaying my voltages too low. I had them set in bios to 1.42 I believe and yet it was 100% stable with a night of prime 95 never going over 57* c.

This would be fine for everyday use but basically the most demanding this I do on my computer is a bit of Autodesk revit, autocad and Counter Strike- source lol. needless to say 3.8 is fine. Hopefully i can get my hands on a new cooler soon and I will push it to it limits and reply back.

here is the screenshot of my everyday settings. in bios, I now have my voltages at 1.375

The voltage in Hardware monitor seems to vary a bit, but I'm told this is normal....

Ok so i tried to get there all night and half of the day i run normaly at 4.0Ghz 1.50vcore with a HT link of 2200 and ram at 7 9 8 24 @1600 but i have to say i think 3.8Ghz is the sweet spot there is not much of an improvement from 3.8 to 4.0 i was not able to get it to 4.2 and above with out raising the voltage i dont think it is worth the voltage increase and CPU degeneration i am sur to get there with voltage increase but i wanted to get there with out it my ram might be holding me back. i tried every combination i could think of i got close using prime95 but every chip is different this is my 3rd 965 black and it was easy to overclock my other 2 would not take well to it this one i have seems to eat it up.

I was fine at 4.0ghz until I ran folding@home multicore, which crashed me. I've backed off to 3.9, but it could have been just folding being picky. I'm going to try passing 4.0 on normal use (no folding).

So I have been trying to break 4 ghz, tried ever combo between fsb & multi. with a fsb of 200 and multi @ x20 and CPU VID 1.55 CPU V @ 1.62 i can run prime 95 for about 5 min before BSOD. Yeah that suxs, so i went back to my low o.c bios profiles. I got my 2nd profile of 3.8 ghz with x19 and CPU VID 1.450 V core 1.40-1.480, and a 3.9ghz v core of about 1.502 temps peak at 61c but avg load temp hovers around 58c.

I could only run stable at 4+ghz after changing my RAM speeds down to 1067 or 1333 in bios. Running at 1600 or higher caused instabilty.

MUlti 20x FSB 200 Vcore 1.5 CPU-Zshows 1.452-1.485. V

1067-RAM timings are 8-8-8-20-26-1t (16GB...8GB seems to run fine with the 4ghz OC at 1333).
Cool Quiet Disabled
44-47C under load.

It will run with a multi of 21 for 4.2 ghz but will somtimes crash after a few hours under load. Very random so I just keep it at the 4ghz with multi of 20 FSB 200.

I'm late to the party, yeah, but with AMD Catalyst Control Center's auto overclocking I can reach 4.3ghz extremely stable at i believe 1.475 volts. It gets about 55-60c under complete maximum load but never crashes or anything. (Complete maximum being running Borderlands 2 with high physx effect being loaded on the CPU instead of the graphics card in an intense fight with thousands of particles flying around).

I use an Evo 212 Air cooler.
