A qeusion about a power supply

As the tittle says...I got a question about a power supply for a PC that I'm about to buy.

spec:

CPU:Phenom Quad-Core 9550 (Socket AM2+)
Motherboard:MA790X-DS4 AM2+, 790X, DDR2 1066, PCI-E, ATI CrossFireX
Ram:2x1GB Corsair Dominator TwinX CL5 (TWIN2X2048-8500C5D)
Graphic card:MSI HD 4670 512MB GDDR3 DX10.1 HDTV 2xDVI PCI-E x 2
Hard disk:western digital ‏640GB 7200RPM, 16MB, SATA II‎

Should I take an 400 wat power supply or an 750 wat?

-Thanks!

  1. 400 should suffice, but you should go for a 550 for some headroom.
  2. ok... Thanks.

And it's an gaming rig... Would u suggest me to change anything in the system...

The budget is around the 1000$

I would like to focus on AMD+ATI...

    Thanks
  3. $1000 and thats the best you can do? A 9950, 2GBs of ram, and a 4670? Are you buying an OS and a monitor also? Drop down to 4GB of DDR2-800, and get at least the 4830. (the 4850 is a better choice.) Neither of these should add much to the build overall, but will perform much better then the parts you listed. Drop down to a lower quad if need be.
  4. Aye xD My bad, I meant 2 x msi HD 4870 512MB GDDR5 DX10.1 HDTV 2xDVI PCI-E‎

That makes all the difference in the world. I agree with 4745454b, use 4GB ddr2 800, put the money saved into the rest of the system.
  6. I will say, why not a 4870x2 card 2GB?

512MB probably is too little for a 2 card situation.

BTW 9950 just cost some 30 dollars more. Or you may go for the 6400+ X2.
  7. But with all these you really need a 450W+ PS.
  8. ok.....

So like I'm changing my spec to:

    CPU: AMD Phenom Quad-Core 9550 (Socket AM2+)
    Motherboard: Gigabyte MA78GM-S2H AM2+, 780G, DDR2 1066 HDMI
    Graphic card: MSI HD 4870 512MB GDDR5 DX10.1 HDTV 2xDVI PCI-E
RAM: 2x 2x1GB OCZ Vista Upgrade Edition XTC
Powersupply: Chieftec 550W Active PFC, 12cm Fan (24pin)

    Plus a HDD...

So would an 550Wat power supply will do the job? or I should get 650wat?

And more one thing as an Gaming rig is it good?
    Thanks...
  9. ^ NOOOO!!!!!!!!DO NOT GET THAT PSU. It is cr@p! Get a Quality PSU from Corsair, PC Power & Cooling, OCZ, Antec.

For that rig, I recommend PC Power & Cooling 610, Corsair 650TX or if on a tight budget this:
    http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817341010&nm_mc=OTC-RSS&cm_mmc=OTC-RSS-_-Power%20Supplies-_-OCZ%20Technology%2c%20Inc.-_-N82E16817341010
OCZ StealthXStream 600W $30 after MIR

Note: A good quality 500W+ PSU can run that rig easily (ie Corsair 550VX).

    =================

Can some one explain to me why people keep thinking they can skimp (as in quality) on the PSU and spend the money on more powerful GPU?? You are risking a powerful/expensive card/CPU,etc by skimping on the PSU!
  10. You should really ditch that 4x1GB setup for a quality 2x2GB kit like this:

    G.SKILL PI Black 4GB (2 x 2GB) 240-Pin DDR2 SDRAM DDR2 800 (PC2 6400) Dual Channel Kit Desktop Memory - Retail
    http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820231209 $49.99

A 4x1 setup is harder on the motherboard and cuts off your upgrade path.
  11. Beware the OCZ PSUs. Some of them are built from the FSP "epsilon" line, which have a noise/ripple issue on the 12V line. (it doesn't get out of spec, but it has been known to hit 100mv which is very close.) In my opinion, why buy something that gets close to spec?
  12. ^True. I AFAIK the one I listed doesn't belong to the Fortan Source line up.
