I thought it would be useful to start a discussion to get people's views. I have been looking for fast and reliable HDDs for my new DS410j. I provisionally decided on Seagate Barracuda 7200.11 1.5TB but then I spotted several reviews which indicate that this drive is hit and miss. Other drives like the Samsung HD153WI and Western Digital WD15EARS are reliable but relatively slow. Can anyone suggest a drive that ticks both boxes without costing the earth?

3G or 6G interface?

If you've got an available PCI-E slot,
we're having fun with this $20 SATA/6G card from ASUS:

It does not support RAID, but we enabled an XP software RAID 0
using 2 x WD1002FAEX:

Here's the ASUS model U3S6 with 2 x USB 3.0 ports out the rear panel
for only $30; it also has 2 x internal SATA/6G ports like the one above:

Here's the 3G version of that WD HDD:

OOPS! Just noticed that your DS410j is an external enclosure:

http://www.synology.com/enu/products/DS410j/index.php

SATA/3G and USB 2.0 only:
Internal HDD1: 3.5" SATA(II) X4 or 2.5" SATA/SSD X4
External HDD Interface: USB 2.0 port X2 (480 Mb/sec @ 10/8 = SLOOOOW!)
LAN: Gigabit X1
