Dear All,

I am wondering if it is possible to use a wireless network to subcontract processing to another computer?

I often use my laptop for graphic work because its more convenient, but my laptop is slower than my desktop.
Is it possible to use the processing power of my desktop wirelessly to speed up operations on my laptop?

Thanks for any help you can give me

Adam

Hmmmm....... I dont think this possible. Even if it was possible the wireless network would be only able to handle on wireless N 300 mega BITS a second. So you wouldn't see much speed benefits there.

About the only thing i could see of how you desktop could help your laptop is if the laptop send a packet of data to the desktop. The the institutions in the data tells it to prosses it and then sends it back to the laptop after it's done.

what im think is the same process as Folding@home uses.

Although im not sure what program would do something like that for the average consumer.

Thanks for the advice, I see what you mean, it would be very slow.
What about if it was wired?
Is it possible with a wired connection?
What connection would I use?

Thanks

Well if it's wired then you may be able to do at max 1 gigabit on a laptop (Most laptops have 100 Megabit nic cards) . although it's still slow compared to a storage drive. SSD and HDD run at most 3 gigabits, soon to be running at 6 gigabits ( the storage drive are considered the slowest part in a computer besides networking stuff)

Just to give you an idea what speeds you are looking in byte instead of bits:

Speeds of storage drives ( if they used the full speed. )
6 giga bits = 750 mega bytes
3 giga bits = 350 mega bytes

speed of networks
1 giga bit = 125 mega bytes
300 mega bits = 37.5 mega bytes.
54 mega bits = 6.5 mega bytes.

(8 bits = 1 byte)

What you probably going to have to do is buy a more powerful laptop to see the same speed benefits (if not more) as your desktop.

thanks for the advice mate, I dont want to have to buy a new laptop but at least I now know that it would be useless to pursue another method!

Cheers!
