Request for feedback picking motherboard

I'm building a gaming PC, possible HTPC use too, and trying to pick the CPU/motherboard.

I ran across a deal for a Phenom II 940 and Gigabyte MA78GM-US2H combo for $280.

I'm not sure whether it's a good pick. I'm feeling ok about the CPU, but one site for example recommends an Asus motherboard that runs nearly $200 to go with that CPU.

I'd appreciate feedback on what is good to get and why, in particular about the above, but other suggestions if not that.
