is it possible to up-grade dell Inspiron 1100 to 80 GB, and will the Bios know the new Hardware?

More specs?? what is in your system?? what OS are you running?? which new HDD will you be using?? IDE or SATA?? I need more info before I can answer that.

I have a 1100, and yes it is possible and very easy to upgrade the HD.
You will need to purchase an IDE/ATA 2.5" hard drive like this:

Make sure it is not a SATA connection.

It will also need a fresh install of windows so get ur cd ready and backup your data.
I put Xubuntu on mine and it runs pretty well.

edit: no BIOS update needed for HDD upgrade.
update my be needed if upgrading RAM beyond 256mb
