cd burner not recognised due to virus

I have a cd burner not recognised on a toshiba laptop.any ideas to get the burner back without losing my data .i know the burner is lost due to virus.thanks for any ideas.

and this relates to CPUs how?

i havent' hear of a virus that disables. external devices.

I KNOW that Viruses CANNOT hurt your drive.

Go into windows control panel under "system" or "device manager". Look for any device drivers with a red or yellow mark next to them. Uninstall them and reboot your system, and let windows reinstall some devices. This may remove any conflicts that prevent your cd from working.

To the OP: if you still suspect your system has a virus, I suggest you visit Microsoft's Onecare site and run the free AV scanner.

I had a problem with a trojan earlier this week, that Trendmicro failed to nail after a couple evenings of downloading various utilities from them. However Onecare cleaned it in one go. Sure beats formatting the partition and reinstalling XP
