GTX 295 to revive 9800GX2?

i was thinking about this and the GTX 295 is just like the 9800GX2 and they will need to make drivers for the "dual-gpu" single slot card. so does this mean driver support for the 9800GX2 is back kinda? they are the same except one is GT200b chips and the other is G92 chips. so i would bet that the release will be a breath of fresh air to us who own a 9800GX2 because new drivers will support the GTX 295 all the way back to series 8 cards. i expect the 9800GX2 to start seeing performance increases with the release of the GTX 295/drivers because if series 8 to the GTX 295 is supported, the profiles for the GTX 295 will be there for the 9800GX2. what do you guys think, GTX 295 reviving 9800GX2 support or not?

....or the drivers for the 295 could be just as bad or worse. Remember the 7950GX2? Nvidia seems to have problems with all their 2pcb cards.

I remember the 7950 GX2 very well. I had a buddy that had a several issues with it, which caused me to stay with my 7600 for quite a while. Quite happy with my 9800 GX2 though and I don't plan on upgrading until Windows 7 and DX11.

As far as reviving 9800 GX2 support, it would be nice but I'm not going to hold my breath. Mine does all I want it to do right now, don't know how well it will handle future games though.

I am still having outrageous issues on my 7950GX2 (on my 2nd system AKA the girlfriend's system). It is so bad (random, frequent 3-10 second lockups) that I am strongly considering picking up a 4870 for myself this week and putting my 8800GTS in her system.

If nVidia plans on pushing the new dual pcb G200 to the forefront of gaming, they will NEED to put out the best possible drivers. What it always boils down to is the opinion of the populace. If nVida can score 2.6 million on 3dMark06 (yes, that was supposed to be a joke) on their own test systems but we here cannot even run stable at any game settings.... well, we all know what will happen.

picking up a 4870 woudln't be a bad idea seeing hows its only around $180 on newegg... but i have a 4850, and i don't plan on throwing that away just yet...maybe when the hd6000 series comes out in 2010 =P

I'm pretty sure that they way the GTX295 is constructed is different enough from the 9800GX2 that any improvements made to the 295 driver would not impact the 9800GX2. Nope nVidia doesn't want to sell or support the GX2 because they want you to buy a newer 280 or 295.

NOt yet, but its bound to happen

I think the card will still be supported just not updated...meaning prob nothing on it other than SLI additions might be done on it.

Nvidia is prob going to drop it pretty soon.

The 295 GTX is impressive but 6 months 2 late.

Yeah... BUT just like the 9800 GX2... this might be a shot in their foot...

If this is close to the performance of their next gen flag ship... they are screwed that generation too... just like they were with the gt200

actually i'd be happy if the same thing happened like last gen. I'd feel more comfortable @ 60 fps on a single GPU card compared to 70 or 80 dual GPU:D

except can you honestly tell someone who is just looking for top performance at a reasonable price

To pay 500$ for a gtx 280 (now like 400)

Or 300$ for a 9800 gx2 when the average person won't notice micro-suttering... (now like 2 - 250)

well you can't. But to an enthusiast ..you can. i for 1 noticed a significant difference going from quad sli 9800 Gx2 and single 9800 GX2. I would take 1 280, 260, 4870 over that setup anyday.

If you tried the 9800 GX2 yourself and then switched to more powerful GPu, then you'd be agreeing with me:)

hmm... palit made a triple slot 4870X2 a while back, will this open the doors for more than dualgpu single cards? i don't think at the moment with drivers... imagine the driver issues with 2x 3gpu cards in SLI :lol:

To the OP, that nV is bringing out the GTX295 is not an indication that they intend to support the GX2 any more than the GF9800GX2 meant they would support theGF7 GX2s.

Multi-GPU solutions are always iffy. They seem like the future for both companies (especially with the commercial success for the HD4k X2) but like stocks, past performance/actions do not guarantee future returns/results.

maybe if they made a 4830X2... that would pretty much directly compete with the 260.

4670 = 8800GS/9600GSO
4830 = 8800GT/9800GT
4850 = 9800GTX/GTX+
4870 = GTX 260 core 216
4830X2 = GTX 280
4850X2 = GTX 285
4870X2 = GTX 295

ya?

Actually I've seen the 4850 X2 match come under or exceed the 280 GTX...so I dunno.

Those are just assumptions on scaling games.

I'm waiting for the next Single GPU solution:D

yeah. well two 8800GT/9800GT's are slightly (7 fps better) faster than a GTX 280, and the 4830 was created to compete with them so i figured...

i too saw benchmarks pitting the 4850X2 as on par with the GTX 280 and people were like wow! thats awesome! and i was like >.> that cant be right.

think about it - if two 9800GT's beat it, then two 9800GTX's must! and the 4850 was designed to compete with that! so the 4850X2 should completely OWN the GTX 280... but somehow it doesnt?

Well no rule is perfectly straight right?:)

I mean 2 4870s I've seen most of the time outperfom the 4870 X2. So for ATI its a little different considering their GPU is soldered on the same card.

And in all honesty I have alot more respect for trying to be innovated, than Nvidia's quick glue gun technique.
