Vista install only works when HD not detected

When I try to install vista home premium 64 bit it goes to the loading screen and turns black. I restart the computer and I try again, this time it works but the hard drive is not detected. I shut off the computer and try installing again and the same thing happens. The installer seems to only work when my hard drive is not detected.

Is the hard drive brand new?
