i have a Pentium D 820.

What would you say the average CPU temp should be?

Right now it Idles at 55 and under load it's around 63. I just installed a new heatsink/fan(it's quieter when it's not spinning) and i used the manufacturer thermal paste. .

1st Question: Are the temps near where Pentium Ds are typically? I believe i have heard that they do run hot.

2nd: Would changing the default thermal paste make much of a difference? I have some Arctic Silver lying around. I would've used that, but the heatsink was an absolute bastard to put in and it would've been quite a mess.

3rd: Should i be worried if it's too hot? Currently I am running Prime 95 (installed new ram too) and just wanted to see what the load temp would be and to heat up the paste so there is a stronger bond. between cpu/heatsink.

4th: Can you recommend some program that allows me to control the fan speed of my heatsink. It idles at 55 and remains quiet.....then 4 mins later it spins up fast, but the temp doesn't even budge....then it gets quiet again. rinse/repeat.

Any help/suggestions are welcome.

btw, the heatsink/fan i installed was an Arctic Cooling Alpine 7

Your temperature looks fine, if not low. Usually the Pentium D idles around 50~60C, and loads around 80~90C. Therefore you shouldn't be worried at all.

As for the program, you can try SpeedFan, or even the utilities that came with your motherboard manufacturer (ASUS for instance).
