I read many forums stating that overclocking Core i7 920 needs a RAM with 1600 mhz but I only have 1333 mhz RAM.

I want to overclock my core i7 920 from 2.66 Ghz to about 3.0 Ghz to 3.3 Ghz using only 1333 mhz RAM, but is that possible?

Specs:

Processor: Core i7 920 2.66 Ghz

Memory: 3x2GB Kingston DDR3 1333 Mhz

Motherboard: Intel DX58SO

Video Card: Powercolor HD5870 1GB

Hard Disk: Wester Digital 500GB 7,200 RPM

Power Supply: Gigabyte Superb Pro 610W average to 720W Peak

You have to understand OC'ing to understand what people are telling you....

You have to increase the BCLK (or CPU clk) to OC a 920.

Standard clock is 133 - right? standard mem clock is an x8 multiplier. 133 x 8 = 1066 which is the default memory speed.

Increase your clock to 200 on the 920 and use the default memory multiplier of 8 and you are at 1600 for RAM speed. So now you need to drop your memory multiplier to use something slower. The next step down (x6) is 1200 - so 1333 RAM can work if you are running at 4.0GHz.

Multiply your CPU clock speed times your memory multiplier to find your memory speed....

133 BCLK x 20 CPU multiplier = 2.66 Ghz
133 BCLK x 8 memory multiplier = 1066 < 1333 underused

167 BCLK x 20 CPU multiplier = 3.33 Ghz
167 BCLK x 8 memory multiplier = 1333 = 1333 ideal

200 BCLK x 20 CPU multiplier = 4.00 Ghz
200 BCLK x 8 memory multiplier = 1600 > 1333 NG

200 BCLK x 20 CPU multiplier = 4.00 Ghz
200 BCLK x 6 memory multiplier = 1200 < 1333 OK

For that magic 4 GHz OC while maintainoing default 8x multiplier, that's why most peeps go for the 1600
