XP-Vista Installation

Im kinda new to this and not really sure about sorftware, but i have a toshiba laptop with vista installed on it, but its really poor and i much much prefer XP. My parents have a dell PC and have a reinstallation disk for XP with it, would it would if i used this on my laptop? and would i need to activate it somehow?

You cannot use it if it is installed on another PC. If it is NOT installed on any other system, you may, and I repeat maybe, be able to use it.
If it is an OEM version that came with the PC, it very likely will not install on another PC.
If it is not already installed on another PC, and if it does by some chance install to your laptop, yes it must be activated to work.
If it is already installed on another PC, DO NOT even try to install on yours.
