SAS 6G compatibility over legacy 3G backplane

Can any body confirm whether or not new SAS 6G controller cards coupled with new SAS 6G HDD can operate at 6G speed over a legacy SAS 3G backplanes (storage rack chassis) equiped with mini-SAS connectors SSF-8087/8088?

Based on my readings, SAS 6G is backward compatible with legacy SAS 3G systems but on the other hand, I couldn't find any articles confirming that it can operate at 6G speed. I also read somewhere that it should be the case on 3G passive backplanes but have no clue what "passive" would stand for.

Hi we use 6G SAS drives with legacy 3G backplanes and they operate only at 3G speed. It's obvious.
