Problem While Installing Ram?

Hey, I was upgrading Ram on my father's computer from (1) 256 MB DIMM DDR PC3200 stick to two low density 512 MB DIMM DDR PC3200 sticks. So, I;m sure the ram is compatible.

Anyways, I'm pretty amateur with operating on the inside of computers, but I have done hard drive and dvd drive switches before.

So, I ground my self and install the Ram, boot the computer and get 3 long beeps. Problem is I didn't know that putting the ram front or backwards was important (again me being stupid). So I keep playing witht he RAM and adjusting its position. Now when I plugged the power cord into the computer, it turned on right away with me even hitting the power button. Then I smelt a burnt smell from the memory sticks.

Now when I put the new or old sticks, no beeps at all. When I remove the sticks and leave the computer with no ram it beeps the 3 long times again.

He has an emachines d2880 and it was intel motherboard. Not sure the model but i can get it if needed.

I know the desktop is old and not worth much, but it fits his needs and just needed more RAM. So hopefully someone can help me figure out if its done for or not. Thanks!
