Hey guys. My 88GT just blew so i decided to get a 285GTX, which is pretty nice and thought i'd order another 4GB set of ram (and discard my 2gb). Everything works fine with my old RAM, however when i put in my new ram (Corsair XMS2 PC6400-C5 5-5-5-18) nothing happens, it powers up but doesnt boot at all.

PSU: OCZ Stealth 600W
MOBO: P5N-E SLI
CPU: C2D 6600
GFX: GTX 285
OLD RAM: PATRIOT 2GB PC6400 4-4-4-15 (2x 1GB) (2.2v)
NEW RAM: CORSAIR XMS2 4GB PC6400 5-5-5-18 (2x 2GB) (1.8v)

Any ideas?

PS - Apparently the XMS works fine on 32bit

Bonse is retarted. You can use 4gb with 32 bit you just won't be using the whole 4gb (3.5 to be exact) RAM could be bad... or not compatible with your motherboard.

"retarted" and no i was saying ITS COMPATABLE you dick, some RAM doesn't like 32bit apparently. I've only just got it, opened out the box and it's broke... hmm

ps i hate my motherboard.

Does it POST with a single module? The RAM itself doesn't know about 32 or 64 bit operating systems.

It does nothing. It powers up and just stays turned on, but doesnt actually boot. The Bios settings are all on Auto so it'd set it at whatever it needed to.

My mate apparently has the same board and he installed 64bit and it's all worked fine... however i don't fancy shelling out for 64bit xp. (Vista's ***)

Even if you install a 64-bit OS, that won't help if the system doesn't POST. However a 64-bit OS allows accessing the full 4 GB.

If your new modules are on the QVL and they don't work, then they're either defective or the specs have changed and they no longer are compatible.

Yeah i see what you mean, if i was to get a new motherboard, what would you recommend?

I want something that's compatable with loads of ram and a solid board.

If you don't need SLI, then the Gigabyte GA-EP45-UD3P, GA-EP45-UD3R, Asus P5Q Deluxe, P5Q Pro and P5Q-E are good motherboards. I have 8 GB of G.Skill 800 MHz RAM in both my GA-EP45-UD3P and P5Q Deluxe and they work fine.

Expensive though for saying it's just a ram issue. =/

Reply to Bonse

Could you return the new RAM and buy RAM that's known to work properly with that motherboard?

Reply to GhislainG

Yeah just researching that now. Will have to RMA, stupid asus this is so bad for themmost on the QVL are shite ram, doesnt mention any 2gb modules.

The G.Skill PI Black 800 Mhz DDR2 RAM should work: http://newgskill.web-bi.net/bbs/vi [...] asc&no=126

Your motherboard is on their list.
