After installing some recent "recommended updates" my
computer responds more slowly, freezes intermittently,
spins its hard-disk feverishly and overheats. Two of my
colleagues are experiencing the same. Does anyone have
ideas as to how to solve this problem???

Updates do change the operating environment. You might check the websites
of your various device manufacturer's for updated drivers, in this case
especially for your graphics card and soundcard. If you have the latest
drivers, clearly something on the specified systems is not getting along
with the updates. You might try using System Restore to take your system
back to a time before you updated. Start\All Programs\Accessories\System
Tools\System Restore.

Which Recommended Updates did you install? You should be able to check via
Windows Update and the "install log".
