Okay so I just bought a new ASUS HD 4850, and it is factory overclocked to 680MHz Core and 2100MHz Memory. I also bought a new Phenom X4 9950 (2.6GHz) 125W processor.
Now, when I tried firing up Crysis it worked for a little while, but then when it got to the really graphics-intensive scenes my LCD monitor's screen just completely shut off. The computer was still running, though...
Could there be something wrong with my graphics card?
Could it be my power supply? I know the Phenom takes a LOT of power when under a heavy workload, and the Radeon isn't exactly a power-saver... And the PSU I'm running is an ULTRA 500W... Yes, I know it's not a great PSU, but I just haven't gotten around to buying another one...
Full system specs (new parts and old) would help greatly - including brand (Ultra) and model (??) of PSU.
Three possibilities - flaky power supply failing under heavier load because of new components, bad new video card, bad new CPU. The simplest thing to do is to borrow a known good PSU of adequate capacity.
If you cannot do that, you need to test the new parts separately. First step is to test the original configuration to make sure it still works.
Then test the new video card with the old CPU. If the old CPU pulls less power than the new one reducing the load on the PSU, there's a good chance the new video card will work. If system doesn't work, the problem is probably the PSU or new video card. Third possibility - thermal problems.
If system works, put in new CPU and old video card. Test. System should work. Check thermals. This just insures that the new CPU is still good. CPU's are seldom the problem, but you need to check.
If both of these steps work, the problem is almost certainly an inadequate PSU.
It's definitly the PSU. Those ultra's are complete junk. They are overrated so it's probably closer to a 400-425 watt PSU.
You can get a PC Power & Cooling 750W PSU that will probably last you many many builds, for $70 off newegg right now. It has a single 12v with 60A, and its stable as a rock.
Yea you know I tried playing some less graphics-intensive games such as SPORE and Command & Conquer. Nothing went wrong. No problems. Yet when I tried a game that required lots of processing power, it did what I mentioned above. I guess I'll be getting a new PSU! =) Thanks for your help. And yes, I know Ultras are junk. And plus the one I have is like...3 years old...so the capacitors are probably going out and stuff like that.
