EP45-UD3P issues with BIOS, boot failure...PLEASE help!

Kind of a newbie...it's been over 5 years since my last build. I had to do very little in the BIOS then with an ASUS board. Went with Gigabyte this time around.

Having some issues with the BSOD and boot failure issues. I think it's related to the BIOS auto settings being incorrect. I'm not a gamer, so I don't think I'll overclock. I'm going to try walking before running. At this point I just want the system to run stable as it should. Maybe after i get it going and image the drive, I'll tweak it some more. After some early advice, I looked and noticed the DRAM was undervolted and the CPU Host Freq was at 266 instead of 333. I also manually set the RAM timing to 5-5-5-15. But other than that, I don't know what things like are like (G) MCH Freq Latch, System Memory Multiplier, CPU and MCH clock skew, etc etc etc? Please help!!!

2 other issues I've had are with the Easy Tune 6 and the SYS_FAN2. Vista asks for permission to continue with ET6 at every start up which is anoying. I've uninstalled it and will likely use a different utility to monitor temp and fan settings unless someone has some tips. Other issue is that the front case fan won't work in the SYS_FAN2 header. The header is 4 pin and the fan is 3 pin, but shouldn't it still work? Currently, it's hooked up to the PWR-FAN header.

Did you run Memtest to make sure the RAM is fine? Are the memory modules installed in the yellow or the red slots? Why did you set "Extreme Memory Profile" to Disabled? If you check the SPD tab in CPU-Z, does Corsair provide an EPP profile?

Take the System Memory multiplier off auto and reduce it to 2.

Then, reduce the DRAM voltage to 1.8V.

See if that resolves it. If so, that's a starting point.

Most software that ships with motherboards is junk. here's a few handy items:

I didn't really understand the profiles associated with the "extreme memory profile".

If the EPP is what I think it is...I had them set accordingly based on Corsair's specs at 5-5-5-15 and 2.1V

actually, I asked this question in the homebuilt section and you mentioned that the RAM might be undervolted. I was actually getting the BSOD when it was set at the auto 1.8V. And even then it was stable for a while, but eventually started Blue screening.

Also, if I set the multiplier to 2, doesn't that take the 1066 RAM and reduce it to 667?

Yep that's the point. Sometimes RAM get's overrated. 800mhz, 1066mhz, they are often the same chips just overclocked. If you set it down to 667 and the problem goes away, you have a starting point.

Memtest detects faulty RAM modules, but it doesn't always pick up on the voltage problems or such.

If Corsair sold you over rated RAM, which happens, they'll make it right. It's always a good idea to match the FSB and DRAM frequencies when troubleshooting anyway.

i have almost have same the system Q6600 with a Geforce GTX 285 being the main difference...

Guest what! i a had BSOD issues in Windows Vista x64 besause of a bad memory clib and now it works fine with 8 gig of the same memory @ 1066 5-5-5-15 2.1V EPP enabled so +1 Proximon for memtest

Make sure Load in line calibration is set at disable and your MCH is at 1.2v

a little note for the memory... i use the corsair memory airflow kit to cool the ram.

if you use RAID make sure the use the lattest intel matrix storage driver from intel.com not gigabyte

Is Memtest the app within Vista? Because I did use the app within Vista to check the Ram, but I understand that it only tests for faulty RAM, not undervolted or over-rated RAM. Or are you guys talking about Mentest86+?...which I tried to use but could get to work. Seems a big hassle to have to make a bootable floppy or CD.

Any suggestions for apps that test RAM?

Ravenxe, if you have any suggestions on my BIOS setting or notice anythig out of whack, please let me know.

Biggest bummer is that I'll have to probably RMA the RAM and I got it at Newegg, which means I'll have to wait. I think I have to pay to send it back too? AND, the rebate for the RAM is supposed to be postmarked by this Monday...so I'm not sure how that will work. I specifically bought my MB at Fry's since the price was the same and I thought it would be easier if I got a bad board (and that was the think I REALLY didn't want to have to return. stupid RAM!

It's relatively easy to download Memtest86+ and burn the ISO to a CD. Click "Download - Pre-Compiled Bootable ISO (.zip)" at http://www.memtest.org/.

You're bios settings are the same compare to my rig... it should work well

it's hard to have working Corsair Dominator @ specs 1066mhz 5-5-5-15 2.1 v. Make sure you burn test your system with your replacement RAM. i use OCCT linpack for 6 hours and prime 95 64 bit 8 hours a day for 3 day's and on the last day one dimm failed.

Summary thus far...

Using BIOS settings listed at bottom.

#1 Tested module A in slot 2 and mod B in slot 4
Boot OK
Memtest86 = OK
#2 Tested module B in slot 2 and Mod A in slot 4
Boot OK
Memtest86 = OK
#3 Tested Module B in slot 1 and mod A in slot 3 (today)
Boot = reboot loop
Window boot manager error "File:\windows\system32\winload.exe windows cannot verify the digital signature for this file"
froze up
Memtest86 = ERRORS immediately!
Shut down after successfully getting into windows
#4 Tested Module A in slot 1 and mod B in slot 3 (today)
Boot = froze, reset, froze, window boot manager error
ran windows memory diagnostic tool = OK
Reboot attempt - BSOD
reboot loops, freezing, reset
Memtest96 (finally got in!) = ERRORS, but not until test 5 (and I was literally in the proces of typing that it was good so far). Cancelled test.
Went into Windows to try and repair windows (thought it may have been corrupted, but the install would not continue...said that a file was missing for the installation process.
Tried to shut down and got BSOD - TWICE!!
reboot & shut down
#5 Went back to test #1 conditions (slots 2 & 4). Wanted to see if the issues with test #3 and #4 were due to a file corruption (since I kept getting the windows boot manager errors), so I went back to what worked
Booted OK
Memtest86 = OK so far (good through over 8 passes (5+hrs)...and going).


I'm starting to think it might be slot 3 of the Motherboard?


The MB is the LAST thing I would want to return. But looking on the bright side, I bought the MB at Fry's and can exchange easily enough and Corsair is in the Bay Area and I can do a will call RMA. So either way, the exchange will be relatively fast.
