Build:
ASRock X58 Extreme
Core i7 920 @ stock speed (2.66)
Cooler Master Hyper 212 Plus
OCZ Platinum DDR3-1600 3x2048MB
Corsair CMPSU-850HXEU
5850
Big case with 4 fans, and good airflow.

Even at stock speed this machine goes over 80C after just a few minutes of prime (idle around 40). I've build a similar machine with the same cooler and a i5 750 @ 3.6, wich runs 70C after 24H of prime.

The Hyper 212 Plus should be able to do a better job, or am i missing something?

I've used arctic silver. The fan on the cooler runs 100% (2000rpm) all the time.

I have tried to take the cooler off again, clean up and reapplyed the paste. Same result.

It's a really thin layer. Like i have done for several years now.

There high temperatures just can't be right.

well the i7 920 runs really hot

u have to put some 120mm fans all around, check cable management that blocks airlfow inside ur case!!1

This is a picture af another rig i build. The one concerning this thread is build exactly the same. (besides from the components) The case is a modded antec p180

It's a old picture, the power cable for the CPU now runs on the back side, just lige the ones for the upper/back fans. Airflow should be no problem.
There is also a fan in front. (missing in this picture)
