I'm new to pc building so hopefully this is just a dumb newbie mistake.

I boot up the system and the ram, graphics card, and CPU but hard and optical drives on SATA and IDE aren't being recognized at all by the bios.

I guess you have the power plugged in to them? I know it sounds stupid, but it's the first thing on the list.
Do you have the controllers enabled in the BIOS?
Do you have the jumpers set correctly on the IDE drives?

You've installed your motherboards chipset drivers?
