before u dont read and reply, just make sure u realize its a 1gb hd 4870, and a gtx 260 that is superclocked, so its not just a hd 4870 vs a gtx 260.
also disregard the rebate on the asus card i picked, i wont be ordering that soon.

i picked ASUS EAH4870 DK/HTDI/1GD5 Radeon HD 4870 1GB because it has ASUS dark knight quad-pipe cooling solution

or the EVGA GeForce GTX 260 Core 216 Superclocked Edition for the extra boost in speeds and processing cores

If the 1GB 4870 gets most votes, will sapphire brand be fine to go with? i think i can save by getting a sapphire instead of this asus, but same specs, just less cooling i guess.

thanks for any help, suggestions, etc.

What size monitor are you gaming on? If less than 1680x1050, bother cards are overkill.

I would go with the gtx260 core 216. In most reviews I've looked at, the only games the 4870 1gb performs better in are "Race Driver GRID" and "Need for Speed Undercover"...and they're both kind of lame, arcade style racing games.

I would go for the nvidia because well my brother has a HD4870 and plays farcry2 on a 32" monitor but when i connected my mates pc with the nvidia GTX it seems to have a higher FPS on the same screen, plus most games have a habit of leaning towards Nvidia so you know probs better compat on that side too... thats my opinion anyways...

i said in my opinion well if your going to act like a monkey and jump around like an idiot do it with some tact please... forums are based on half opinion and half fact so really at the end of the day what you going to do listen to some people like you who have a higher rep simply because they post stupid comments... anyhow i still do agree with you when you say HD better some times and GTX better others...

if it were me choosing, id go for the 4870 1gig becuase in the future id probably crossfire another one and crossfire scales much better than SLI.

excluding crysis that is ;)

you must not have scanned the link I posted above. look at the minimum frame rates and look at the benchies OVERALL.

Shoot i forgot to mention my monitor, i have a 24inch acer, running at 1920x1200 which is why i was going for the 1 gig hd 4870, however if even at that reso and the monitor size if the 512 is fine and will save me money maybe thats the route i should go.

thx for ur replies, keep them comming

how does that work, my thoughts on upgrading every 2-3 years, would be to get the one with DX10.1

I am deciding between these two graphics cards as well. I plan on overclocking whichever card I get. My question is: which card will overclock better (performance & temperature) and ultimately yield better framerates?

That's what I was wondering aswell. I take it it's very easy to OC a HD4870 from the CCC that comes with the drivers, but what about the GTX260? Is there a CCC-like program that nVidia gives away with drivers aswell, that gives control over fanspeed and OCing?

I know that evga provides a precision overclocking tool for that purpose. I'm pretty sure its easy to overclock either card but the real question is overclocking potential. Based on what I have read, the gtx 260+ operates at much lower temperatures which means higher overclockability (the new 55nm chip can possibly be overclocked even more). But what about the hd4870 with non-reference coolers like the Sapphire one? Does it operate at significantly cooler temps?
