I have an old Gateway GP6-400, serial #0015407342. 320MB ram, and a 40Gig Hitachi hard drive divided into 2 equal partitions. It has Windows XP Pro SP3 with all current updates. I have updated the BIOS from 4W4SB0X0.15A.0013.P08 to 4W4SB0X0.15A.0019.P14 (Phoenix). I installed Win XP on another system and have tested the hard drive on 2 others & have no problems. I have also used the Hitachi Diagnostics on the GP6-400 & have had no problems.
Now, the problem I'm having is that the PC locks up when I get to the start up menu. It doesn't matter if I select any of the Safe modes, Last known good, or start normally. As soon as i select one of the options the system freezes. ANY help would be much appreciated! I am at my wits end & don't know what else to do.
Have you run memtest86+ to test the RAM? I would also take a close look at the PSU as it's most likely junk. If you happen to have an extra PSU around, plug it in and see if it helps.
Tried the memory test & thats ok, also tested the PSU and that s working fine too. I did try 2 other PSU's that are known good and still have the same problem.
Sounds like its a MoBo issue. The Sherlock theory, when all other probable conclusions fail what you are left with the the solution and the improbable. or something like that. try Win98 install...320MB ram is not enough for WinXP 512 is the minimum i would go. you can find cheap working computers for like 75+shipping on Ebay.
It might also be a CPU issue however theirs no way to mark either the MoBo or CPU without a like same socket MoBo to test the CPU or another CPU to test the MoBo.
