Hi, I'm a second time poster but long time reader of Tom's. So, I'm building a new PC and I'm going for best bang for the buck type of setup. Augmenting that I want a stable and some what fault tolerant build.

The reason why I'm building a new PC is my PC is old an dying plus I want to play Diablo3 / Starcraft2 and since they aren't coming out for the xbox I'll have to get a PC that'll do the job. I plan on OC'ing to get a good cost to performance ratio.

Here's what I've spec'd out and I'm happy with but I'm not sure if the PSU I've picked is beefy enough for the components I've selected.

CPU: $82.99
Intel Pentium E5200 Wolfdale 2.5GHz LGA 775 65W Dual-Core Processor Model BX80571E5200
* Plan to OC to around 3.66Ghz

CPU Fan: $26.99
ARCTIC COOLING Freezer 7 Pro 92mm CPU Cooler

MB: $119.99
GIGABYTE GA-EP45-UD3R LGA 775 Intel P45 ATX Intel Motherboard

RAM: $59.99
G.SKILL 4GB (2 x 2GB) 240-Pin DDR2 SDRAM DDR2 800 (PC2 6400) Dual Channel Kit Desktop Memory Model F2-6400CL4D-4GBPK

Vid card: $149.99
SAPPHIRE 100245L Radeon HD 4850 512MB 256-bit GDDR3 PCI Express 2.0 x16 HDCP Ready CrossFire Supported

PSU: $79.99
Antec True Power Trio TP3-550 550W ATX12V SLI Certified CrossFire Ready Active PFC Power Supply with Three 12V Rails

HD: $139.98
2 x Western Digital Caviar SE16 WD6400AAKS 640GB 7200 RPM SATA 3.0Gb/s Hard Drive
*planning on configuring Raid 1 for backup purposes

Burner: $23.99
LITE-ON 20X DVD±R DVD Burner Black SATA Model iHAS120-04

Case: $49.99
COOLER MASTER Centurion 590 RC-590-KKN1-GP Black SECC / ABS ATX Mid Tower

I'd like to go cheaper on the PSU but I don't know enough about PSU's to get a good, stable one that'll give me enough power and keep my system rock solid. Antec has always been good for PSU's so I picked that as a safe choice. I'm ready to pull the trigger on this build an purchase today but I was hoping to get some advice before doing so.

Thank you for taking the time to look over this build.

The PSU you choose would suffice.

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Prod [...] 6817341010 is what I use. The only downside to this PSU is that there's only 3 SATA, so for you, you won't be able to add another BURNER or HDD in the future (unless you get a Peripheral to SATA adapter).

All your other choices are pretty solid.

Corsair tx750, maybe a bit more than you need. but its like 90 bucks after rebates.

What about this one:

Antec EA650 650W ATX12V Ver.2.2 / EPS12V version 2.91 SLI Certified CrossFire Ready 80 PLUS Certified Active PFC Power Supply

It's only $59.99 and free shipping.

Yeah, that's a good PSU, too.

It's beyond me why anybody would consider scrimping on a power supply. It's the cheapest insurance you can buy for any computer.

Reply to ram1009

It's not scrimping on a PSU.
A decent and reliable PSU aren't always expensive.
Especially when you're choosing budget components.

All, thank you for your advice. I'm going to pull the trigger on my build with the Antec EA650 650W ATX12V Ver.2.2 / EPS12V version 2.91. *shotgun BANG*

Update: Got everything on Friday and assembled / posted my PC. I initially overclocked to 3.6 Ghz using the template below. However, I'm still not able to get to 4 Ghz but going to keep trying for a little while and see where that gets me.

On a side note... I hate Vista 32bit ( Ultimate ). Control Panel wont open ( windows explorer crashes every time I try to open it ), Media Center gives me a black screen and I've updated my video drives to the most recent version ( I can hear media center starting up and I can blindly click but only black screen when in that window, if I alt-tab out to another app that's on my desktop I can sometimes see the media center in the background but when I alt-tab back to vista I only get the black screen ).

My HD Audio drivers were almost impossible to install, Vista kept auto installing a driver and then when trying to install the Bus driver would fail ever time. I couldn't figure out how to prevent Vista from auto-installing it's own HD Audio driver which then kept my HD Audio driver from installing. Very frustrating.

I'm going to downgrade to XP SP2/SP3 tonight when I get home. I would have done it over the weekend but I need a floppy drive so that I can install the RAID drivers when XP installs. I'm going to have to scavenge a floppy drive ( and floppy ) from our work datacenter, shouldn't be a problem as we have tons of old hardware laying around.

Here's my template. Should I repost under the Overclocking forum for future help on getting more out of my setup? Also, this template was from the same MB but different processor. I can't find anyone who has a e5200 and the EP45-UD3R to compare with. Here's the post i took the template from:

You went with a 32-bit OS for a new build? 64-bit Vista is where it's at. 32-bit won't fully utilize all 4GB and doesn't even offer the option of adding more RAM down the line.

One thing that could be causing problems is the PCI Express Frequency (Mhz). It should be manually set to 100. When you overclock with this set to auto it also overclocks the PCI Express bus. I would also leave tRRD, tWTR, tWR, tRFC, & tRTP on AUTO until you get the overclock finalized. The "problems" you are blaming on Vista sound more like an unstable overclock than OS problems. Have you tested the OC with Prime95 or another stress-tester?

Do I need to think about 64bit compliant hardware if I would be going with a 64bit operating system?

Also I find the lack of vista drivers / software disheartening. I haven't been able to find a Vista complaint Nortel VPN client yet. And the "problems" I've stated also happen when I don't overclock ( running at the system specifications ).

I installed Vista using the stock settings and then overclocked after everything was installed ( all drivers, etc ). I do have PCI Express Freq set to 100Mhz, I forgot t update that in the template. As for the tRRD etc I'll switch them back to auto but like I said I have had all these problems before I overclocked so I don't think my OC setup is the problem but maybe I'm wrong. This is the first PC I've overclocked and the BIOS settings for this MB are numerous and many times confusing.

Edit: Forgot to add that I have not run Prime 95 or any other type of stress test as of yet.

I installed XP Prof Media Center Edition last night and all was well. No sound driver issues, no black screen when trying to launch media center, etc. I haven't had any errors at all with XP.

I'm going to run some OC stress tests soon but I'm not sure what's best to run.

Is Prime 95 the guy I should think about the most? Should I boot up my PC and start this test off and then go to work and run it all day? Any other tests I should think about?
